In attempting to provide technical descriptions for the full breadth of Oracle's product set, Oracle Essentials does not lack for ambition. Herein are descriptions of Oracle's system files and processes and their interactions, plus the whole range of database features (from data-types and data-storage mechanisms, through security and performance features and including coverage of Oracle's support for parallel processing, OLTP systems, data warehousing and distributed systems). Installation and database maintenance, as well as the more common database development tasks, are also covered.All of the above is well written but in necessarily concise terms, meaning Oracle Essentials is likely to be of insufficient depth to the day-to-day Oracle user. However Oracle Essentials is an excellent introduction to, and overview of, Oracle technology, especially for those looking to fill the void between the Oracle sales brochures and the many doorstopper reference manuals. --Michael O'Connor
