The world famous ocean liner Titanic, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1912, is the latest subject to receive the Haynes Manual treatment. With an authoritative text and hundreds of illustrations, see how this leviathan was built, launched and fitted out. Read about her lavish passenger accommodation. Learn about the captain's responsibilities, including the operation of a transatlantic liner. Consider the chief engineer's view - how did he manage the huge engines and other onboard systems? What was it like to operate a luxury ocean liner from the perspective of Titanic's owner, the White Star Line?

Books have been written, films made, we have raised the Titanic and watched her go down again on numerous occasions, but out of the wreckage Frances Wilson spins a new epic: when the ship hit the iceberg on 14 April 1912 and a thousand men prepared to die, J Bruce Ismay, the ships owner and inheritor of the White Star fortune, jumped into a lifeboat with the women and children and rowed away to safety.
Accused of cowardice, Ismay became, according to one headline, ‘The Most Talked-of Man in the World. The first victim of a press hate campaign, his reputation never recovered and while other survivors were piecing together their accounts, Ismay never spoke of his beloved ship again.
With the help of that great narrator of the sea, Joseph Conrad, whose Lord Jim so uncannily predicted Ismays fate - and whose manuscript of the story of a man who impulsively betrays a code of honour and lives on under the strain of intolerable guilt went down with the Titanic - Frances Wilson explores the reasons behind Ismays jump, his desperate need to make sense of the horror of it all, and to find a way of living with lost honour.
For those who survived the Titanic the world was never the same again. But as Wilson superbly demonstrates, we all have our own Titanics, and we all need to find ways of surviving them. -
'Dogger. Rockall. Malin. Irish Sea' - the amusing travel book that journeys round areas made famous by Radio 4's 'The Shipping Forecast'.

Product Description
The collected memoirs of 63 survivors of the sinking of the Titanic. There were 712 survivors of the Titanic disaster and their horrific experience has captivated readers and movie goers for almost 100 years. But what was it actually like for a woman to say goodbye to her husband? For a mother to leave her teenage sons? For the unlucky many who found themselves in the freezing Atlantic waters (a few did live to tell the tale)? TITANIC VOICES is the most comprehensive collection of Titanic survivors' accounts ever published and includes many unpublished, and long forgotten accounts, unabridged, together with an authoritative editorial commentary. It is also the first book to include substantial accounts from women survivors - most of the previously well known accounts were written by men.
About the Author
Hannah Holman has been fascinated by the story of the Titanic since childhood. She was brought up with the memoirs left by the survivors and the 'instant books' published in the USA in the year following the disaster which also included testimony from survivors. She studied English Literature at Birmingham University and now lives in Bath.
The Kindle Edition of this book is highly illustrated with 135 illustrations, 18 in colour. -

Sailing Solo Alone is a true story about a guy who is a little bored with life and seeking some kind of excitement, buys a yacht.
Three weeks later and with all of two hours sailing experience under his belt, our hero (for want of a better word) decides to take his 18ft over-grown dingy for a 40 mile trip around the North Kent coast.
The Sea has one attempt at killing him. The boat manages to stay upright, more by luck than anything else. He even finds a safe haven for the night. Does he stay there? No!…
He actually sets out to sea at three o'clock in the morning. If you felt the need to be charitable, you may have said, it was quite a nice night for a bit of a sail. Then again, this was the North Sea. The North Sea in October!...
Leaving the pier heads and the safety of the harbour. It was as dark as doomsday out there... And only going to get darker.
It wouldn't be long before he realised buying a yacht called 'Solo', may not have been one of his better ideas.
All a little late by then... -
The first comprehensive guide to the canals of Britain, packed with maps, colour photographs and fascinating text relating the history, folklore and attractions of the canals.
