CorelDRAW 9 is a mature and complex graphics program. Foster D. Coburn III and Peter McCormick's CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is a detailed volume aimed at designers on how to get the best out it. They discuss text, blends, transparency, customisation, scripting, effects, importing, outputting, object and page management. They even reveal CorelDRAW 9's ability to create and output post-script and true-type fonts. Their style is informative and straightforward and the text's generously illustrated throughout with screen grabs. There's a even colour section showing off award winning artwork. The accompanying CD-ROM carries project files used in the book for hands-on experience as well as utilities and demos.
CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is broad rather than deep and covers a lot in 875 pages. It would have been better if the hood on CorelDRAW 9 had really been lifted and its inner workings displayed since what professionals need to know is how it inter-operates with the ubiquitous PostScript. The new option to export to Adobe Acrobat's PDF does get its own chapter but it's a little light on technical details.
Unlike some other books, this one covers only CorelDRAW 9 itself and not the whole suite, which confusingly shares the same name. If you're also interested in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 you will have to buy Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 The Official Guide separately. Ultimately though CorelDRAW 9 The Official Guide is simply the best guide available. Even the Corel Corporation think so--they've endorsed it. --John Cranmer
