This is volume two of William Shatner's excellent mirror universe trilogy, continuing the story begun in Spectre. Captain James T. Kirk's counterpart, the brutal Tiberius, has turned up in the 24th century, where he threatens to take control of the Federation. Starfleet has been infiltrated by mirror universe doubles, even more difficult to spot than Changelings, and Starfleet Command is worried. Kirk is determined to defeat his evil double, a determination that becomes very personal when an attack on his pregnant wife Teilani, at their wedding celebration, leaves her on the brink of death. At odds with Starfleet over his methods (as usual!), Kirk is assisted by Spock, McCoy, Scotty, the mirror Spock and the mirror Janeway. Working alongside Captain Picard, they attempt to uncover Tiberius's plot. Matters are confused by the mysterious Project Sign, a Starfleet operation so classified that there are no records anywhere of its personnel or advanced ships. Shatner's action-packed story ranges across the galaxy to great effect, setting some of the action on DS9, some aboard the Enterprise-E, and including many of the major characters from all four series. Shatner's writing is reminiscent of his acting--larger than life, at times technically suspect, but hugely energetic and enormous fun. Volume three, Preserver, should be a cracker. --Elizabeth Sourbut
