The Homecoming is the 24th novel in Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' Dynasty series, chronicling the life and times of the Morland Family. In this latest instalment, the family's fortunes are precariously balanced. The book opens with the story of Henrietta Morland, recently widowed by the death of Rector Edgar Fortescue, who "had been dead 20 months on that September day in 1885 when Jerome Compton suddenly reappeared in her life". In language that recalls Jane Austen, Harrod-Eagles observes that"when Henrietta stepped joyfully into the arms of her one true love in the churchyard of St Mary's, Bishop Winthorne, it was like the ending of a fairy story. It ought to have been followed by nothing but those magical words, 'and they all lived happily ever after'. But life--and love--are rarely disposed to be so tidy".
The Homecoming follows Henrietta as she moves with her new husband and young daughter Lizzie to the social whirl of late 19th-century London, leaving behind her stolid brother Teddy Morland to struggle with the crumbling Morland Estate. Events in London soon overtake everyone, but disaster and exile can often lead to salvation and a homecoming of sorts. Harrod-Eagles describes the characters and background of her stories with effortless ease, and The Homecoming will delight all her dedicated readers. --Jerry Brotton
