This worthy winner of the Smarties prize in 1989 is a timeless classic that is enjoyed by children of all ages as well as by the adults who are continually asked to read it again and again. Follow the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of the bear. What a surprise awaits us all in the cave on the other side of the dark forest. Michael Rosen's lyrical, repetitive text reads aloud beautifully and Helen Oxenbury's delightful watercolour illustrations not only provide the perfect complement but also add another dimension to the story itself. (Ages 3 and over)
A Big Book edition of this story is also available.

When Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's family go on a bear hunt, they are full of the bravado and confidence that the knowledge of failure brings:
We're going on a bear hunt,
Caves, mud, rivers, forest whatever obstacles the family encounters, they overcome with reassuring ease. But when their quest is successful, they decide bear hunts are not to be repeated.
We're going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!
We're not scared.Chunkily manageable for little hands, repetition of the "We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh no! / We've got to go through it" kind, and frequent onomatopoeia ("Swishy Swashy Splash Splosh Hoooo Woooo") will maintain interest for even the youngest of listeners.
The only disappointment in this wipe-clean board book is that the colour story boards are alternated with less interesting black-and-white ones, but apart from that Helen Oxenbury keeps to her usual high standard of illustration and, combined with Michael Rosen's delightful tale, it's easy to see why We're Going on a Bear Hunt is a former winner of the Smarties Prize. A lazy and fat farmer spends all day in bed, eating chocolates and reading the newspaper, while his poor duck has to do all the work on the farm. One evening, the exhausted duck collapses in tears, to be comforted by chickens. The farm animals are very fond of the duck, and outraged by the farmer's behaviour, so they hatch a plan.
This engaging cross between Cinderella and George Orwell's Animal Farm, won the Smarties Book Prize, was British Book Awards Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and was also Highly Commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal. (Ages 4 to 8)--Lisa Gee
A Big Book edition is also available.

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has continuously delighted readers, young and old, for more than a century. A classic tale that has been interpreted by many an outstanding artist over the years, this remarkable story of one little girl who embarks on possibly one of the most amazing, fantastical adventures in literary history has more than stood the test of time.
Here, in this stunning new edition, Helen Oxenbury, one of the most exceptional contemporary children's illustrators, turns her hand to what is certainly no small project and has succeeded in surpassing expectation. More abundantly illustrated than other editions of the same work, this unabridged version is packed with contemporary and accessible interpretations of the kaleidoscope of characters--the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts--who have each captured the imaginations of generations of children.
Alice herself is portrayed as a thoroughly modern miss--casually dressed, personable, and spirited--and her surroundings are brought to effervescent life with a warmth, depth and distinctive sense of humour that perfectly complements the shenanigans of the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland.
A perfect gift for any child, this stylish, must-have version of Carroll's unforgettable fantasy is perfect for confident young readers to read alone, or is ideal for sharing as a bedtime read with an adult. (Age 7 and over) --Susan Harrison
