National Geographic publications are famous for their gorgeous illustrations, and this guide to Sydney is no exception. The book begins with a feisty introduction to contemporary Sydney, its food and drink, and the arts. It's strong on historical detail, and one of the few guides which allocates appreciable space to Australia's indigenous inhabitants, the Aborigines, providing information on sites, tours, arts and cultural centres, as well as explaining concepts such as "dreamtime". The guide takes the reader through Sydney's 600 square miles of suburbs, covering features and events from shipwrecks to Mardi Gras to Australian wine. There are excursions into some of the magnificent national parks surrounding the city, as well as walks, cruises and hikes, and the region's wildlife is depicted in all its ravishing finery. Further afield are beaches and mountain landscapes, and general information on transport, hotels and restaurants is given in the final chapter. The maps throughout are excellent, and easy to follow. With Sydney hosting the 2000 Olympics, this is an exciting time to visit the city, and all you need to know on this subject is detailed in an "Olympic Survival Guide" chapter. Well written, and lovely to look at, National Geographic Traveller: Sydney is a delight to browse through, even if you never make it to the exuberant city itself.--Philippa West
