This book is for SharePoint developers working with Publishing sites--sites that leverage MOSS 2007 WCM capabilities. It does not cover administrative topics in any great detail, only where absolutely necessary.

Plenty of books have been published on ASP, but many lack the technical depth to teach you how to build a complete ASP-driven site. Look no further, because Active Server Pages 3.0: Your Visual Blueprint for Developing Interactive Web Sites delivers a visual, step-by-step approach to building dynamic Web applications using ASP.
This book is a sort of toolbox, sporting a simple format that guides readers through straightforward examples. Instructions and demonstrations are given for over 100 core tasks, each of which is broken down into two-page lessons with accompanying screen shots that illustrate them visually. Along the way, you will learn how to work with cookies, query strings, database connections and custom error messages.
The "Apply It" section takes you one step further than the core lesson by illustrating fine touches such as delivering user-friendly error messages. The "Extra" section gives examples of important shortcuts, tips, and tricks such as how to abort the execution of a for...next loop. Both elements include ready-to-run code. A "Reference" section includes most commonly used VBScript and ASP statements for easy access.
As a bonus, the companion CD-ROM includes all the sample code from each of the two-page lessons, shareware versions of additional programs to be used with ASP pages, and an e-version of the book. This is an indispensable and valuable guide

Lots of people who set out to deploy Microsoft Site Server aren't really big on network and Web site administration. Rather, they just want to get a good-looking, reliable site up and running as quickly as possible. Beginning Site Server 3.0 is the perfect companion for such Web entrepreneurs. It's easy to follow but hardly dumbed down. The authors (consultants and programmers of various stripes) know that the purpose of Internet commerce is to please customers and make money, not fool with technology for its own sake.
A large part of this book takes the form of storyboard-style procedures, in which the authors explain (with many screen shots) the steps to follow in order to install Site Server and use its (rather powerful) site-construction wizards to build a business-to-consumer Web store. It's an effective presentation strategy, leaving little to the imagination during the critical set-up stages. The authors then make up for the limited flexibility of the storyboard approach by presenting detail-rich chapters on the databases that back up Site Server, as well as Pipelines, search facilities and various extensions. The programming information here is good but you'll probably want to supplement this book with one dedicated to Active Server Pages (ASP) if you have lots of custom work in mind. --David Wall, amazon.com

Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition is a powerful tool for efficiently building Web storefronts. If you are not familiar with the product, however, jumping in to customise a store may be a daunting task. Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition is a course in the basics of the architecture and the customisation process.
The book begins with a brief overview of the Site Server CE architecture and then uses the Volcano Coffee Company sample to illustrate the registration and shopping processes as they are implemented in Active Server Pages (ASP) code. There's lots of code printed in this book, with lines relevant to the text frequently highlighted. The accompanying commentary is sometimes a bit too brief but lends itself well to programmers who prefer to learn by scouring code.
Most of the remainder of the book is devoted to a look at store customisation. The Site Foundation Wizard is covered screen by screen, as well as the Order Processing Pipeline and all of the components that perform the work. There is also a chapter on the Ad Manager and a nice one that explains how secure transactions are implemented.
This isn't a comprehensive guide to Site Server 3.0 CE by any means. However, it offers a quick read that's perfect for managers and first-time programmers under the gun to learn. --Stephen W Plain, Amazon.com
